We've got a jam-packed evening set for this Community Program - an update on the Connecticut Bird Atlas, a view of some members' photos, and a bird quiz.
Connecticut Bird Atlas team leader Chris Elphick will tell us how things stand with just one more summer and one more winter survey to be done. The Connecticut Bird Atlas aims to provide comprehensive information about the distributions of all species that occur in the state. With the help of the state’s birding community, they are conducting fieldwork during both breeding and non-breeding periods, with data collection focused on describing both where each species occurs and how abundance varies across the state.
Chris Howe will follow with a photo essay that shows highlights of her adventures doing surveys for the Bird Atlas. Winter birds, birds during the breeding season, cute chicks and fledglings, and the unusual will be featured in Chris’ slides.
High school student Nathan Rees, who has been photographing birds since he was in elementary school and is the recipient of a Menunkatuck scholarship to Audubon’s Hog Island Teen Birding Camp, will show us some of his nature photographs. Reptiles, butterflies, and birds will be included in Nathan’s presentation.
Between the photo shows we will have a bird quiz. How well do you know the size of birds? How about bird name anagrams? Can you id birds from blurred photos? Don't worry. There are no exotic birds, just common backyard and park birds. Have a competition with your family. Here’s a sample question:
What bird is this? Hover over photo for answer.
