Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)is a fast-growing 2- to 4-foot short-lived perennial that readily self-seeds with new plants blooming the first year. It has 2- to 3-inch yellow flowers with dark centers. Brown-eyed Susan does not require much work and is drought tolerant. It will grow in partial sun but does best in full sun. Butterflies and other pollinators are attracted to nectar at the flowers and American Goldfinches, Black-Capped Chickadees, and Northern Cardinals are attracted to the seeds. It is deer resistant and somewhat salt tolerant.
