Cut-leaf Coneflower
Cut-leaf Coneflower
Cut-leaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata) is a 10-ft tall, long-blooming sunflower-like butterfly magnet with large, deep green glossy deeply cut leaves along the stems, and loose clusters of clear yellow ray flowers with large green cones that darken with age. It blooms for 8+ weeks in mid to late summer. The nectar and pollen of the flower heads attract many kinds of insects, including long-tongued bees, short-tongued bees, predatory wasps, butterflies, skippers, moths, and various kinds of flies. The center cones elongate and become brownish as the seeds ripen. Because it spreads rampantly by underground stems, cut-leaf coneflower is only appropriate for large sites. It may need staking in garden situations but otherwise very hardy. Tolerates hot and humid summers, but not drought. Remove spent blooms to encourage a fall re-bloom and divide clumps to control growth.
