Few native groundcovers rival Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) for its combination of delicate beauty, shade tolerance, and easygoing nature. Each spring, a frothy haze of tiny white to pale pink flower spikes rises 6–12 inches above the foliage on slender stems — an airy, abundant display that earns the plant its common name. The blooms are a welcome early-season resource for native bees emerging from winter dormancy. Once flowering subsides, the plant's real workhorse takes over: handsome, heart-shaped leaves with attractive lobing and, in many selections, striking burgundy or bronze markings along the veins that deepen as temperatures cool in fall. In milder winters, the foliage remains semi-evergreen, providing ground-level interest through the cold months.

A natural inhabitant of the woodland floor, Foamflower is well suited to shaded and part-shaded gardens, where it spreads steadily by stolons to form a lush, weed-suppressing carpet.

Virtually trouble-free once established, it asks for little beyond moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil and protection from harsh afternoon sun — conditions it shares with the woodland garden plants it complements so naturally.
