Gray Dogwood (Cornus racemosa) is a thickly  branched, slow growing dogwood seldom more than 6 feet high at maturity. It prefers moist soil but will adapt to drier sites and grows in full sun, partial shade, or full shade. Its flowers, which bloom in June or July, are white and loosely clustered, and its white fruit, which appears in September and October, is set off by bright red fruit-stalks. The fruit of this dogwood is eaten by birds like Northern Cardinal, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, and Eastern  Bluebird, and other wildlife. it attracts butterflies and is the larval host for spring azure butterflies.
