Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is is a low, clumped, grass-like perennial, 6-12 in. high. In early spring whitish spikelets are held above the leaves, followed by clusters of brown seed capsules clinging high on the stems. Foliage is pale-green in spring and summer, turning sandy-tan in fall. It tolerates heavy shade and wet soils, though its ideal location is dry to moist shade. With its relentlessly spreading rhizomes, this plant is a good lawn substitute for shady areas but will not tolerate heavy foot traffic. It is resistant to deer.
