Seaside Goldenrod
Seaside Goldenrod
Seaside Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) is an herbaceous perennial that grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet. It produces yellow flowers in summer and well into the fall, later in the season than most of its relatives. This plant is highly salt tolerant and deer resistant. It does not spread by rhizomes or become invasive. Seaside goldenrod provides benefits for native wildlife such as butterflies, birds, and small mammals. It is a major food source for the fall migrating monarch butterfly. It is an important resource for over-wintering, gall-producing insects. Some of these insects are predatory wasps that are beneficial to have near crops. In addition, gall larvae provide an excellent source of nutrition in the winter for birds such as Black-capped Chickadees and Downy Woodpeckers.
