Wild indigo (Baptisia australus) is a 3-to-4-foot dense shrubby perennial with attractive blue-green leaves. In late spring, blue to indigo pea-shaped flowers are held aloft on upright flower stalks. Wild indigo has a deep taproot and new plants appear slow to develop as they spend energy producing the deep roots; after a couple of years when roots are established, the upper part of the plant begins to flourish. They are nectar sources for bees and butterflies. Plants host caterpillars of Frosted Elfin, Eastern Tailed Blue, Wild Indigo Duskywing, Clouded Sulfur and Orange Sulfur Butterflies as well as the caterpillars of moths and skippers. They are somewhat unpalatable to deer and rabbits.
