Winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) is a native, deciduous, large shrub that rarely exceeds 10 feet. Summer flowers are in dense panicles from July to September. The leaves have an excellent red fall color. Drupes appear in fall and persist into winter. Shrubs are usually separate male and female plants so both are needed for fruit set.

Winged sumacis a larval host plant for red-banded hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops). It is also a host plant for the Luna moth. Butterflies and bees nectar at the flowers. Its fruits are eaten by songbirds, white-tailed deer, opossums, wild turkey, and quail. Its bark is eaten by rabbits.
