Around 300 species of the parrot family have been recorded throughout the world. There are 56 species found in Australia, all but five endemic. Parrots are large colorful birds with powerful bills for cracking seeds and nuts and also feed on fruit, nectar and sometimes insects. Many depend on hollows in mature trees to nest.
Amy Hopkins is President of The Parrot Club, Connecticut's oldest companion bird club, and a long-term member of Menunkatuck Audubon.
